This just arrived today and it is something I have been anticipating for a few months now, ever since AMT announced the unlikely re-issue/re-tool of the original go kart from back in the early sixties. So lets see what you get. First some box art, very nice too: heres what is inside, fully crammed to the top. No way this stuff is all going back in there after taking it out: Heres the paper work: And a closer look at those totally kool cals...check out the go kart monster art! Not sure I have ever seen that before. jb

Now lets get to the plastic Body and cab, no expert here so no opinion. Looks like a truck to me, probably a Chevrolet: Frame and springs and stuff. Must say I am not a big fan of those big connection points on the frame rails. Interior and wheel backs etc Suspension and hood etc Straight six engine and misc: Door panels etc: Tires, these look pretty neat, thin whitewall on one side and semi wide on the other, nice Firestone lettering on sidewall, these are keepers. Maybe they are in other kits but don't believe I have noticed them before if so. OK so there is all that truck stuff, I don't have any prior versions of it so I don't really know if any of it is new or original. As you can see its all pretty crisply molded with minimal flash on my initial examination. But now...the best for last...the long thought lost original go kart, obviously retooled because the (semi)original parts were in with the 63 Ford F100 Pickup parts on the chrome and white sprues but here they are on their own (ready for a parts pack) sprues. Check out in all their magnificence especially the chrome sprue: So I believe that's about it for this one, and a grand one it is, and as predicted no way all this plastic fits back into that box so I guess I better start in on building the kart! And sorry for the pathetic photographs, I really could do better. jb

Thanks for the great review, as I said on other thread, this kit is a must have in order to build the SMP '61 Chevy Pickup that I have waiting. The Kart is really cool too, thing might be a pretty good seller for AMT.

You're welcome and maybe I am jumping the gun. It is a nice kit and I plan on getting a couple more just for more go karts.

Ron, I will trade you your kart for my truck, minus the kart, decals and the wheels and tires. If I can get it back into the box! shoot me a PM if you are interested. And I appreciate the offer, thanks!

Here is something I should add to my review: the tires. I praised them above while they were in their plastic bag and I was viewing them from afar. Well, they looked good from far, but up close, they are far from good. Take a look...I was fitting some wheels when I noticed the problems: you will notice the marks on the whitewalls, the wide side anyway. Pretty much makes them unusable to me. And remember these were protected by a plastic bag until I removed them just prior to this photo, so they were not scratched up while in my possession. The one on the left has the obvious gouge out of the whitewall and the one on the right has slightly less obvious defects but they are there if you look, scratches and the whitewalls are totally off center. here you can notice how off center the whitewalls are with some wheels fitted. The wheels are not stretching or distorting the tire in any manner, they are just laying centered in the tire center hole. These were the other two tires of the four that come with the kit, and you can also notice the scratched up whitewalls along with the off center problem. So, final verdict on the tires: totally craptastic. Unusable, for me at least, at least the way they came in the kit I bought. Maybe they are better in other kits. Maybe you could strip off the whitewall and either use them for blackwalls, or reapply some kind of whitewall decal or paint. The other side, with the modern narrow whitewall, are better, no obvious scratches at least, but still off center. Its a shame they were not done better because the sidewall detail itself is very nice. Round 2 needs to make some major improvements on these tires in my opinion. jb

Wow what a disappointment that would be if you were planning to use them. Looks like quality control is slipping a little over at R2. Thanks for the heads up.

That's a bummer about the tires, especially as all of the other modern Pad Printed tires in these Round 2 reissued kits have been great quality. Now it would be interesting to hear from others if their copy of the same kit has that tire problem as well.

Niko, you might post asking about the tires on some other forums, and lets hear what you hear back.
as it is, I am just going to strip the whitewall and live with blackwalls for some build in the future.

The tires in my kit are totally useless too , both the wide side and narrow side printing are off center and they all have nicks and scratches in them ! On top of that the printing isn't done evenly , they fade from 100% white to maybe 25% white ink and one narrow stripe almost disappears completely !
The tires included seem too small for such a big truck but that's just me . . . I'll be using some different tires anyway .
