In rereading the comments here since the new year began I am disappointed in the low level of participation. In some other model forums there is zero action. I don't fault the "regulars" here. The shrinkage of the hobby generally and the aging of many builders has taken its toll. With models no longer sold at many stores (Toys 'R' Us, Wal*Mart, etc) there simply is less interest. The best we who are here can do is post a bit more, build a bit more (or post some long ago early models) and try to get members of local model clubs and convention/flea market attendees to try these fine online clubs. It's asking a lot, but the hobby can only thrive if folks come and participate. Anyone know builders who aren't yet going to the web for model interest? Tell them what they're missing. Agreed. Well said.

I've read elsewhere that all of the modelers have moved on and are posting on Facebook and Twitter . I don't know if that's true or not since I don't have an account with either one , maybe someone here who does have an account can chime in and confirm this . I suspect it has more to do with the feeling everyone has about the state of the economy and ( without getting political ) the country in general . harron68 is correct ( I wish we all were on a first name basis ) but I don't know of any way to make people post more builds . There are obviously a group of members that visit regularly just to see if anything new is going on , and also new visitors every day . I do that here and on a couple other forums , sometimes two or three times a day , and usually don't post or reply to anything unless it really interests me . So it's like a germ that is contagious and keeps spreading until one day we all post new builds at the same time !

Makes sense Bob. I think you're right. I don't have either of those accounts as I have no need for them, heck, I don't even have a "smart phone" !

It is true a lot have moved on to FB I know so I suppose twitter too although I'll admit I really don't know what twitter is all about.LOL I don't have a smart phone either and as far as FB I have an account but about all it is for is to keep in contact with a few friends and family members that I hadn't heard from in years. Sometimes wish I had never signed up on it!LOL

Facebook and twitter ? To do building progress of models ? Sigh. I hope some of the other old guys stay with this old guy and keep passing through these kind of sites. Really, facebook and twitter ? I wonder if I'm the only person that has never been on either one...

Sigh!!! I agree, it's sad that instead of posting models on a model site (THINK!) folks may choose to just put them on a personal site where friends who couldn't care less won't enjoy them and they'll be lost in the world of FB. I've mentioned this and other model forums on other model sites in hopes of boosting traffic here. Maybe if we do it enough, things may get better. Maybe car racing sites may be interested in this club too if we get the word out.

I have absolutely no interest in either FB or Twitter , and I know quite a few people who agree with me .

Yep I've heard that many folks have moved to FB with their models, and when looking at some other forums, sometimes I see a beautiful model and then the poster just says "Full WIP thread here" and then he posts a link to FB... For me, it's really annoying. I don't have an account on any social media and I'm not interested in having an account either. I don't know many people on my age (17) who don't have an account on FB or something like that. Someone mentioned the smart phone. I have one and it's a real pain to use it! If I try to scroll down a phonebook for example, on my way to the bottom I have already clicked on 5 to 10 names by accident! Anyway I think this is a great forum with lots of talent. I believe we could get more members here if more people would know that this forum exists. I'm pretty sure many people don't know about these "Smaller forums" and they use only MCM and Scale Auto for example. Maybe a link to the signature in some other forums might be worth trying?

I only go on facebook because it seems to be the only way to contact some family members these days. I've tried looking at the so called model pages and find it hard to even get a feel for them so I just stick with the few sites I have been seeing on the internet.

I just have to add my two cents . I use dial up on a 9 year old 'Puter . This is the best I am able to financially support . I use FB to keep in touch of those in my life I still care about . It barely works . many standard features do NOT work . One item is "Search" . So finding Model Car People is out of the question as I cannot find anything . I would not use FB as it is too public . A Model Car Site is perfect for this Hobby Segment . It provides a place for exchange of like minded . On FB not so much . Without getting too Political , let me just say ; "Big Brother is watching you " . Our gov. is desiring to see and monitor everything we do . Thanx ..

I am grateful for anyone who cares enuf about the hobby and still uses dialup to come here. Thank you! If possible, almost all libraries, from city to rural, all have free (if limited) use of comps. Libraries also maintain strict secrecy on who uses them and when. In a way, they are more "secure from government and private enterprise" gathering personal info. It's funny, so many folks fear govt. spying, but spying by search engines and web sites and selling the info to everyone for money, very few of us fear, and they are the ones to worry most about. Our inefficient governments, who often don't or can't share info within and between departments due to things like rules, differences in equipment and programming and simple hoarding of info they have, make government less to fear. Think of how it took laws to force emergency responders (fire, police, civil defense, etc) to have the same frequencies on their communication gear so they could talk to each other. It took laws to do that. Even the N.S.A. and its mega data gathering is inefficient and as internet traffic expands faster and faster, it's hard for govt. spying to keep pace. Worry about business selling your personal data, every keystroke, for money to anyone. That's more dangerous.

I've been a member on the MCM forum since I got back into the hobby a few years ago and I've noticed something over this past summer . The number of models being posted is way down ( just like everywhere else ) but there is a huge increase in a different kind of post . There are lots of posts about " I saw this car today " or " Have you seen cars with wings ? " or " What kits were molded in green ? " . And this is in the " General " section of the forum , the non-modeling section is even worse ! Those seem to be the most active sections of the forum while the actual modeling sections are stagnate . To make things worse the Moderators not only aren't stopping this , they are participating and sometimes starting these threads ! It would seem that the Facebook crowd is now using that forum to chat or gossip about whatever they feel like . I still visit that forum but not as often as I used to and it appears most of the old regulars only show up occasionally . I looks like the new crowd is winning ! I guess I'm guilty of the same thing by making this post . All I really wanted to say is : " Please don't let that happen here ! "

Agreed Bob. I just saw a recent post over there where a new member asked a question about a very popular gasser so he could build a kit and got ripped to shreads like he was attacked by a bunch of hyenas. Very uncalled for I thought. We'll do our best to keep it all civil here.
