DPMCC started on yahoo groups after I met some guys on yahoo chats in a group called "Model Builders 1". I met Mark Ward, Jeff Carter and Kelly Coons are early names I can remember from that chat. This was in around 2002-2003 before groups on yahoo I believe. When groups were starting to take off, there was a handful of "legit" groups specializing in specific genre's.
There was the Straight-line group headed by Dwayne Bressem, the Model Car List and forgive me I can't remember the owner, it's been so many years! There were more groups and some of them still exist on yahoo, but they have changed so many things. The last I knew I was asked by Bob Sifferd if he
could keep DPMCC alive by combining it with a new format that yahoo did, making all those remaining groups into one. I guess the oldest members , the ones that refused to come to forums still communicate the old way, which we did on a daily basis. Everything was done through email. I got hundreds of emails a
day! Much of it was replies and I didn't open every single one, but it was effective. Many friendships were made through these groups, much trust was gained and you knew who to trust when it came to dealing and trading. While there were members who were just there to cause trouble and not follow up on their end
of deals,, overall it was a great community.
Around 2004 is when I came up with the name for this club. I set up a yahoo group and told my friends about it and info about it was shared in our "chat room". It was a cool name that people liked and the members that joined were all among friends of each other. So it was a group of guys who all shared friendship and the same interests. The group grew into hundreds of members quickly and with the participation level and fact I didn't have much going on as I worked from home, I could easily answer questions, help members with things etc. That was a big part of the success in this club. Things have changed over the years, some of our members have passed away or taken a break from the hobby. I did take a break for almost 10yrs but I just didn't build or go to shows. I really had too much going on in my life on the negative side and it took a toll on my passion. I would never give this up though. So I am back once again and trying to re-ignite the passion!
In the beginning around 20 plus members of DPMCC had a nightly chat. There was yahoo chat and you could have as many people join as you like. Once word got around that we had these chats every night, more people joined. It was fun! We could just BS and work on models together, though we were spread out all over the country and even some in Canada, Australia and New Zealand too! These were the days when almost nobody had a cell phone with capabilities like today. We didn't have Facebook groups, we didn't really even know what it was if it was around? In order for us to be able to share our work and see each other , we used web cams! We could hear each other and see each other. We really had so much fun!
About 2005, we had gotten so well known as a club online I thought we should take it another step and have our own website. We had just gotten a fotki site set up with only three people as users with the password to run it.
"The Thee Kings" , Myself, Mj Hundahl and Marc Heitkamp. The president (yours truly) and two moderators. We couldn't decide on a vice so we just all worked together in harmony. Good friends!
So , we had and STILL have a fotki photo site for hosting and sharing what we love with the world, but the website came down about 12yrs ago if I remember correctly. I have thought about bringing it back.
Before yahoo changed things and got rid of "groups" I could see it coming and started this very forum you are reading this on. I urged members to join here as this was the way things were heading for groups of people who share interests online. Many refused but I am glad many did. Now that's pretty much dead, yahoo groups that is.... Things have changed yet further. Most everyone is on Facebook including myself. I have always used Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family , now and then posting something model related, car related, skateboarding etc... just my life in general.
There is a DPMCC page on Facebook but I have to be honest, it's more of a re-direct page to get more members here on this forum. I rarely look at it, so if anyone has tried communicating with me sorry. I am just not much into the groups on Facebook. I wanted to make our presence known.
Well there is MUCH to tell the way of our history and I may tell more stories but I wanted to have this thread to share with all of you our milestones and photos from our past I am sure most of you have never seen or knew about.
Stay tuned, I won't drop eveyrhing here at once lol
thanks for reading!
