All that plus the engine. The original has the 6 carb Pontiac but the later reissues have a loose interpretation of a SBC. I think the headlight bar might be different too but I'm not 100% sure about that. Yep . I have the Classic Cruiser reissue and It's definitely supposed to be a SBC . And the headlight bar itself is the same but the headlights are the newer large diameter ones , the originals were the small diameter headlights . Thanks for the info Ron !

Next is the front suspension . I'm going to use the stock axle and add some knuckles to it for posable front wheels . First is to add a block where the spring is broken . It won't be seen and adds a little extra support . The knuckles will be cut from a piece of rectangular strip . After filing the end of the axle down it's drilled to accept a straight pin . The knuckle is also drilled before finishing it . Here's a finished knuckle with a stub axle installed . And the completed front axle assembly . I kept the same width as the stock axle to keep the stock track . It's no longer a stock restoration but it's still using all of the original parts . To be continued . . .

...It's no longer a stock restoration but it's still using all of the original parts . ... The basic look of the original is good enough to respond well to the augmented details you're adding. Posable steering won't look at all inappropriate and will add some extra impact to the finished model. Looking forward to more, more, more...

The front suspension will be easier to paint as an assembly aand the spare fender unit makes a dandy fixture ! I spent an hour or so hunting for replacement headlight lens the proper size as I didn't want to rob them from another Little T or Blue Beetle . Then it dawned on me to check the new Blue Bandito kit . . . BINGO! those are the ones , they even have the small locating notch on the bottom ! The old lenses popped right out by drilling a hole in the center . Add the Blue Bandito to the list of parts cars or cheap kits to hunt for !

OK I thought something was different about the head light assembly, the lights did indeed look smaller but without having one in hand to compare I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming that! Yes, that front suspension is MUCH easier to deal with when it's assembled first. Coming along nicely.

Here's the new and the old side by side . . . BIG difference ! You have to wonder why the change was made , maybe the trend with real hot rods was the larger single sealed beam lights (?) .

Well, you learn something every day. I never knew the headlights were different. I guess when it received the makeover with the wire wheels, resto rods were in, so they gave it stock lights?

Makes sense to me. Looks like the Son of Ford issue still had the small lights and the Pontiac engine. Too bad the Son Of Ford kit is as hard to find as the Little Deuce . I did a little digging and it does have the Pontiac engine (with diff intake) and correct firewall but it's got the larger headlights . Oh and it's got the correct taillights ! Check the pics at this link : coffincorner.proboards.com/thread/19487/tom-daniels-son-ford

Thanks Bob. Good, interesting info. That's what I love about this hobby....always something to learn.
Sure would be nice if Revell would retro the Deuce kit back to original similar to how they did the Blue Beetle(Bandito). Maybe even a 3 in 1...Little Deuce, Son of Ford or current Street Rod.

Instead of using the Blue Bandito lenses I decided to cast my own . I saw Ron using this clear resin and picked up a can to try . I also ordered and have recieved some mold making silicone and 1:1 casting resin , but for these lenses I just made a quicky mold using some Amazing Mold putty . It hardens and is ready to use in 5 minutes ! A bit difficult to see in the photos but after some trimming they should work just fine . The humidity spiked here yesterday and today (90%) but I managed to spray two coats of clear over the original decals ! To be continued . . .

Molded-in colors, hmmmm, dunno how I feel about it. I grew up building in unpainted plastic. I came to hate white for that reason, until I started using spray cans. Molding in colors bug me as they need more paint, primer at least, when going light to dark or vice versa. As to getting a perfect match to the original, close seems good to me. Any color looks a bit different in reality, depending on lighting (bulb, fluorescent, outdoors, etc) anyway, so close is plenty good. I never thought of my big scale model built decades ago. it sits there atop a cabinet in its unpainted light yellow. Decal calls it "yellow peril," and the light color looks unusual and almost like paint.

What I'm enjoying about this project is that it's what might be called Restoration Plus, combining the art of bringing back the look and character of this period kit while adding little technical and detail touches along the way that keep the approach fresh and contemporary. Coolness...
