Haven't had much time for models lately but did get a chance to rebuild another from that last score I noted above. This is a very vintage looking build of the most recent Tweedy Pie release, I would guess from the tires. It had a really nice paint job but was in pieces when I got it (thats how it was auctioned as well, it didn't get damaged in the post). Mostly complete, just missing a few details like one side radius rod and one headlamp (pair), but the engine and grille shell and body and rear axle were loose and the front axle was broken into three pieces with the wheels still connected to the ends. Kind of a mess but it did look like some skill was put into the build, so I decided to try to get it back together. I simplified it a bit by trimming off the shock levers and just gluing the rear axle to the spring instead of using the hangers (this raises the rear slightly and also stretches the wheelbase maybe 3 scale inches). Mostly it was a matter of a delicate repair on the front axle and then some careful rebuilding. Its good practice because one of my goals for the future is to build two Tweedy Pies, one to represent the Ed Roth version and the other, the car as he bought it with a flathead and other differences. Doing this reminded me of what a kool rod this is but also how delicate the model is. It also reminded me why I never bothered making the door open on this body and instead just glued it shut. Even this one is hinged well, it is ready to break off and only opens an eighth inch anyway. Then there is the 3" gap in the door lines. Anyway, think it turned out pretty good. Now on to the Orange Crate, for a real challenge. jb

As I've been laid up for a month or so, hospital admission etc. I also haven't had time to build. Just keep taking the tablets! I've ordered some 3D pieces from the Shapeways site. Trying something different! Custom Ruckus scooter by Kingtoy. Vee Dub Motor by Ron Rolson -3D Model Specialists. Westphalia VW bus/van/camper Roof Rack by Rail Road Tom. These are all in 1/24th scale. I'm advised that they should be ready to ship on the 21st December.

First off, Pat, I hope you are feeling better, being in the hospital is no fun!
Second, WOW, thats some kool stuff! Especially that VW motor but that roof rack is close behind! Could you give us a link to both and maybe some details like price? You know I gotta get one of each, that roof rack will look great on a Hasegawa VW Bus!

Get well soon Pat! Echoing JB above, hospital stays just ain't much fun but if we're there, it's usually for a good reason. Not sure about where you are but here in the states it seems like if you have decent insurance they try to keep you there as long as possible IMHO longer than necessary. Anyway hope you're feeling better. Good looking parts. I like the VW mill. Any plans for it?

Just look for the Shapeways site and go through the log in process. They have many more of what you see here. All in various scales so the choice is enormous! The basis is that all of these 3D printers across the world use Shapeways as their trading site. Shapeways do the admin, sales and shipping. It was interesting that they show prices in $US and £Sterling but when I made the payment it came up in Euro's! It comes up as Shapeways.com or Shapeways.inc

Yeah Pat I know about the site and have ordered a bunch of stuff from there time to time. Sometimes its hard to find specific items there though so thats why I asked for the links (also to keep me from "browsing" and finding a bunch of stuff I cannot live without!) but I will go look around anyhow. Remember, though, its all your fault if I overuse my credit card!

Thanks for the support, yes they thought I had a gall stones in the gall bladder below the liver, but after a number of MRI scans cancelled over 4 days I finally had one and there was nothing there! But they noticed a perforation in the bladder living so it looks as if they will take it out in a couple of months. Well the VW Mill? When I looked on the Shapeways site they have so many different types, some with turbo's, some standard but I liked this one with the short stubby exhaust. I'm torn between just popping it in the back of a standard Beetle or Baja style Beetle or just get another Meyers Manx kit and put it in there or even scratch build a Sand Rail and try that! Who's to know at present, but it will be on here!

That's why I chose to get these for myself as my wife of 52 years hadn't got any ideas yet, and being unable to find any big stores open or get involved in a queue or crush, not good with Covid 19 still rampant. I looked at my order confirmation the prices for the three pieces ordered were.. Custom Ruckus Scooter £14.63 from Kingtoy VW Engine £8.38 from Ron Rolson-3D Model Specialists Westphalia Roof Rack £12.01.from Rail Road Tom I was also looking at a Brubaker Box but it was in 1/10th scale at £285! I don't know how to do links but the VW engine comes under .. Shapeways>Miniatures>Vehicles>1:24 : VW 1/24 engine weber. I hope that helps.

Thanks Pat. Those are quite reasonable prices. I myself ordered the MGBGT transkit from C1 and also ordered that VW fender scooter from them. If you havent checked that one out you should, it is so kool I could not pass it up! But there I am spending your money for you! www.c1-models.com/resin/124-beetle-fender-scooterOn how to do links, go to the actual "reply" box, not the quick reply at the bottom of the thread, click the icon that is 9th from the right side, it is a globe with a piece of paper in front of it, and it will open a box to insert the link into, copy that link from the page you want to link to and paste it there and Bob's yer uncle! jb

I saw the Shapeways site and nearly fainted they had so much cool stuff, I made a list of about $1000 worth of stuff I wanted. And their Computer graphic images are gorgeous. So I decided to step in lightly and only ordered about $175 worth of stuff, I needed for 1/12 scale projects. If you notice different "members there offer their parts in a range of quality material, and some not. The first batch of parts only offered one material. I was so excited when after a couple weeks they came, parts are made to order which stands to reason they offer 1000s of parts. Opened the box....pure garbage. They look good from a distance, but look closer That's not an out of focus picture, this stuff has the consistency of Styrofoam, totally un useable. So I will use these as templates to scratch build usable parts So I thought, OK the next set of parts I wanted were offered in a "better grade of material, at least they costed more Once again after several weeks they arrived, they are sort of a transparent material. see that powdery looking stuff looks like salt it will scrape right off, so I washed the parts, instantly looked the same. So I thought, OK the top valve cover wasn't so bad, so I made a mold of it, luckily Chevy parts are the same left and right the mold came out OK but I had bad resin or they changed the resin I used for 20+ years, so 1 out of 10 pulls was sorta usable Here is a 1/12 scale injector and scoop A 1/12 scale finned rear end cover Its like a powder salty type substance, so once again I cleaned it with mild solution, soap and water, it looked the same instantly after it dried. So I contacted Shapeways, asked is there is a way of cleaning or prepping the parts, they responded instantly, and said they aren't responsible for any parts, I have to contact the member I ordered them from. (even though they "print" the parts, and I'm sure get a % of the price). So I contacted the member, same one mentioned here. After about a week, he replied and said Hey I just request the parts, Your problem is with Shapeways, they "print" the part. I copied his reply forwarded it to Shapeways. No response. I posted these parts on another board, someone must have snitched me to Shapeways, they emailed me after 4 months, and told me if I have a problem, file a case with Paypal, then deleted my account, so I could no longer contact them.........You can only open a case with paypal for 90 days. But not all is bad, I saw an ad for parts I needed on ebay, from a guy named Mike Nagatini, also a Shapeways member. In his ad he showed actual parts and not a computer rendering as on Shapeways, it's not the actual part you get, but real parts. This is a 1/8 Ford 9 inch rear end ( I already posted this here before) It is made of a different material, pretty nice and usable, or castable. I corresponded with Mike, nice honest guy. Then he listed some 1/12 fenderwell headers, so I ordered a set they came within a couple of days, cause he has them pre made, and not made to order, like Shapeways. very nice, so I ordered a second set. The white powdery look on the left one is just a discoloration in the material, and that is the bottom side any way. Don't get me wrong, those other parts are very nice designed, and scale proportioned. I asked Mike if he could offer these in 1/8 scale and after a couple months he did, but wow they are like $45 then the world went covid and I just haven't been able to afford them. He offers a lot of different parts, but he seems to be on hiatus right now. I just wanted to show you actual parts I have, and not a reprint of the Shapeways computer graphic, that is floating around at all the other boards. So you make your own assumptions. Now, lay into me....LOL Jim

Jim, no laying into you, but yep thats a problem all right. There have been stories about that crystalization growing on shapeway parts although i have never seen it myself. I always bite the bullet and order the best material (if a choice is available) because the cheapest they offer indeed is like you describe and if you are dealing with 1/25 scale or similar those chunks start looking really big. Its not really anyones fault, just the way it is. I always have to prep the parts by priming and sanding and priming so some detail is lost. You have to realize that from the get go. It was pretty rude for them to cut you off like that but i have heard similar stories from others. I have been buying through them for a long time and never had an issue but i do realize their photo graphics are a bit like McDonalds, your big mac just isn't going to look like that poster picture either. Like i say i do not bother with the cheap material i buy the best but even then... Some time ago they totally changed the way they do business, and not for the better, so I am not doubting what you say in the least. And I hate when people point at each other with you in the middle like that...I think it is probably the vendors fault (if there is fault to assign) for not offering the item in better material but i am not sure of the mechanics of how one chooses to list their parts on shapeways site, maybe it is Shapeways who makes the choice? And that crystalization bit is not good, not sure if that has been resolved but others have reported it gets worse with time and maybe even after priming and painting (although...I am not sure those who report such things are totally credible, some seem to pick apart anything but that shouldn't serve to minimize a real problem like they seem to be having and you seem to have there).
that Mike guy, i have bought a bunch of stuff from him, mostly 1/8 scale wheels, and talked to him in person at the NNL west. He is a good guy and his stuff is great but there will still be some striations that need to be taken care of, thats the nature of current level 3D printing though it is getting better all the time.
I also heard, but have not verified, that Shapeways is farming out the actual printing of items these days so maybe that is where the difference in quality you are seeing is coming from. All 3d printers are not created equal, evidently.
My advice would be to not ditch Shapeways (though looks like they ditched you...I would be pissed off about that too) but to step up to the better material and expect some disappointment, but generally things look pretty good if you splurge for the better quality. I have some stuff from Chris from Maple Leaf who uses them and after priming those pieces, they looked pretty nice, but still could use some cleanup. Most of the stuff i bought from him were for buick nailhead engines and oldsmobile engines including log manifolds and carbs. You might try his store next time if you go back with Shapeways. I would be tempted to give them the old heave ho with a one finger salute (you're NUMBER ONE!) but I am famous for cutting off my nose to spite my face, thats why the covid mask actually improves my looks.

jb Thank-You my friend The reason I (joking) said "lay into me" is because everytime I tell this story, people always turn it around on me, and make me the bad guy, when all I did was give them my money and wanted some cool parts in return. glad you backed me up (you know I value your opinion) I was starting to doubt myself. As you can see in the pictures, there is no prepping or painting this stuff. Those 1/12 M/T valve covers I sent you, are part of this fiasco (still sorry about that) the mold is good just haven't been able to afford to try more resin. I noticed the other day at HL, (where I got that batch I used on your stuff) has marked the price down half price, and not because of X-Mas sale, but regular price. So they know something is up also. The next time I will order straight from the manufacturer and avoid the third party issues. Like I have done for nearly thirty years.(but then I have to pay full price) Cool you got to meet Mike N. he was easy to deal with, and hope I can again.
Funny about the mask, that's why I always had a beard, figured the less people had to see of my face the better. Sort of a social service. Those were some awesome deals you got on those Revell kits, we must be looking at a different ebay, these days I can't find too many deals I can afford. Heck, I've got some die cast listed for months now, cheap and no takers, one of them, an in the package rare 1/43 Ramcharger Dragster has 148 views, and it's under twenty dollars delivered!
Good to hear from you, don't be a stranger LOL our best to Otis Jim

Thanks Jim, yeah you just got to grin and bear it man. Otis (my beautiful doggie) is doing fine and he says hello back although it usually just sounds like "BARK!!!". He is 15 mos old and this week is going to be a major life change for him, at the vet, say bye bye to those two things hanging down in back! This photo of him on guard duty was taken a couple months ago. Pat, if you get a chance could you measure that roof rack, mount point to mount point so I can check it against my Best Models split window bug body? It would look great over the open sunroof. Also, about how high does the rack itself sit above the mount points? Appreciate it if you can, if not, don't worry about it, I will probably spring for one anyhow.

I have been getting around to fixing up the Revell Orange Crate that I mentioned above in my big ebay score. Thought some might like to see this, as it is a legendary model of a legendary car, and also a legendary bear of a kit to build. At first I thought this was a fairly early example because from what I could see, there weren't really monster marks and circles on the chrome chassis, and I didn't see any massive flash on the very delicate suspension pieces. But after looking at it closer and more intently, pretty sure it is that late 90s as I recall version with the crap resin hood thing that supposedly didn't fit worth beans. But it has had a lot of work done to it, a lot of flash removal, unfortunately it was never refinished in chrome, so its kind of scratchy in overall appearance. Beyond that, though, it is a really good example of a well built kit, with all the intricate pieces mostly intact, and obviously a lot of care put into building it, and painting it inside and out as well. I mean, theres some glue here and some untrimmed sprue piece there, but when I look at it, I am pretty impressed with what I see. Being as I have never seriously attacked this kit, I think the builder did a remarkable job of a very difficult build. But as I received it, there were many problems, small and at least medium if not large. First off, 3 of the 4 tires were off, 2 because of busted connection points on the axles. Three or four points of the front and rear suspension were broken one way or another. One of the rear shock absorbers was off. The belly pan was off, the front grille shell was snapped off and one door on the body had its hinge pins busted off. Some other little things too as I looked closer. But, the body was built very solidly inside and out, painted very well inside and out and the fit an finish of all the parts was pretty good. Great restoration candidate, and inspiration for when I want to tackle building one myself. So here is a pic of it as it arrived, small pieces are hidden in there somewhere: I have pretty much gotten it together, here are a few pics of the chassis up on blocks gluing the belly pan after repair of the rest of its problems, and I will post some of the body later.
