Here is something I have been working on for a couple weeks, with an eye to using it in a combination of it on an AMT trailer, being pulled by the AMT 63 Chevy II Station Wagon kit that I am also restoring/kustomizing right now. But for now its the Corvair I am concentrating on. Decided to pretty much do it out of the box, with the exception of some engine dress up (dressing down more like, the freakin thing is in chrome out of the box), with wheel swap and some extremeish lowering, but basically the out of box competition version. Normal detailing though, and I also used embossing powder for carpeting, nice effect and used Future as the adhering agent for the first time, another miracle out of the bottle.
For such an ancient kit, its not half bad. Fits together pretty well, the engine was a bit sketchy when it came to where the carbs attached, but it ended up looking pretty good. Could have stood for some better velocity stacks but they looked alright once done. Rear suspension is pretty well engraved and supplemented with a minimum of parts. I replaced the pretty well detailed but blobbed out by time rear axle for just some polished aluminum tubing.
Anyway lets take a look:
I wanted a strange off-color orange, and I found it in the hardware department. I am usually very wary of the cheap big spray can hardware store paint but in this case I wanted an unusual color so I went with this stuff. Its satin finish and is curing, so I intend to polish it smooth and then hit it with some Tamiya clear, add some black stripes and accents, and think it might look good.
I also picked up some other kool kolors in the same paint line (this happened to be Rustic Orange in the Rust-oleum "Painters Touch" series of paints). I am usually really cautious due to past experiences where paints like this attacked the plastic, but I found (on the second go round, I managed to sag the paint on the first attempt...but bonus with cheap paint: I had lots left to try again after stripping!) that if I used really like REALLY fast passes at about eight inches away, it went on pretty smooth and with some great coverage, and no ill effects. (any ill effects you might see in the pics would be from the previous attempt...haven't had a chance to inspect the body yet to be honest). Anyway I am going to see what I can do with these other colors.
Back to the 'vair, heres the engine before the headers were attached. Simple ignition wiring but what a pain locating the carbs, and I am not sure I like em so much as they are but there they are.
alright next post
