For all the crap he takes, George Barris was really an individual who did a lot for the model building hobby. He and Budd Anderson, both were always on the scene with a good word for all and great styling tips. He had his less than pleasant side, I have heard, but model car building would never have been as popular without him. When I page through my old magazines, his name is everywhere, writing columns, appearing at shows and hosting model contests, in advertisements and in his direct working with companies such as AMT.
Gene Winfield is another in that category, he just was more busy working on real cars to be able to make all the personal appearances George was able to.
