At one time, up until the 90s probably, I never looked twice at Hot Wheels. First of all, those wheels! But more, it was that they mostly or solely depicted fantasy cars, or show cars, or cartoon cars, or something similar, and I kinda wasn't that interested. Then...they, or brands I associate by proximity to the Hot Wheels brand, like Johnny Lightning, started producing well detailed, at least from a distance, replicas of real life cars. Including heretofore unheard of marques, the British cars, beyond the common Jaguars, along with kustoms, rat rods, Volkswagens and all sorts of other exotic or at least real life automobiles. I was hooked, in at least a minor way (believe me, I know the depths the disease can take one), but I tried, and still do to restrain myself to certain types of things.
Then there was Matchbox. Always loved them since I was a kid. And they were made in England and to me that kind of meant quality right there. As you probably know, "Matchbox" has gone through a few transformations over the decades, but at some point, and continuing on till today, they have been issuing retro versions of their earlier cars, as well as brand new editions of everything under the sun. So I have some original Matchbox items, and a number of more recent issues along with select issues.
Usually what I do is if I like something, I get two. Then I put one aside (more likely hang it on the wall somewhere) and the other one I open up and put on a shelf with other unboxed examples. I think this is best to do when you get in on the initial release, when you can still get it at Target for 3$ or something. Otherwise, and especially including postage, the price can easily triple or more by the time you get one off the net.
Here are a few photos of one part of the wall in my hobby room. There are a few more wall's worth that I will get to in coming posts. Unfortunately I am shooting with a little built in flash because its going to be way too tedious to take nice shots of each car. So, if you see something that you want to see closer, or want to ask a question about, shout it out and I will do my best to get the thing onto the table top for a nice clear photo!
Here are some reproduction original release Matchbox cars on top, then some "British Invasion" series of UK cars, to the left of those some assorted british offerings, and a Nissan Skyline in there. Especially kool is the Lotus Europa with the box inside the blister pack below the Skyline.
Heres a look at this wall to give you an idea of my organization "system":
And looking closer at that wall you can see some Volkswagens, including some of the bitchin' 181 ("The Thing") variants that came out:
Closer look at the 181s:
Anyway that was just a quick look at one part of one wall. I will try to take some more pics later and add them to this thread. Comments and questions appreciated!
