This project started with Revell's '32 Sedan kit. I chopped the top then converted the body to a Sedan Delivery by making sheet styrene panels to fill the rear windows and carving in the rear door panel lines. This model is going to be representative of the smooth and billet look that became so prevalent in 80's and early 90's street rodding. The chassis is basically from the Revell kit with a few modifications. The suspension was modified to sit lower. New front engine mounts were installed and the center transmission cross member reshaped to accommodate the Chevy small block engine and auto trans from the Revell / Monogram '37 Ford kits. Hosted on FotkiThe engine is basically straight from those Revell '37 kits with the addition of some old S&S Specialties pulley faces and valve cover / air filter appliques. I also made a lower radiator hose which was never provided in those kits. Hosted on FotkiThe interior is made of of parts from several kits. Floor section and bucket seats from Revell's '32 Speedwagon woody. Door panels from Revell's '37 Ford Coupe. Dashboard and tilt steering column from Revell's '37 Ford Convertible. (The dash has had some material added to the top and shaped to match the curved '32 Ford cowl.) The steering wheel is Monogram '33 Coupe street rod / ZZ Top. Between the heavy chop and delivery conversion vision to the cargo area is practically non-existent so I'm not gonna bother doing anything back there. Hosted on FotkiHere's some mockups. The body has been smoothed by filling the door handle holes and sanding away the door hinges and soft roof insert detail. The hood sides were modified by grafting in sections with the very popular (for the time) scoops from Monogram's '33 Coupe street rod / ZZ Top kits. The hood top was smoothed by removing its center hinge detail. I also dropped the grill 1/16" which closed the gap under the hood sides which results from removing the fenders. The wheels are the early-style Boyd Coddington pieces from Monogram's original release of the '37 Ford Sedan with some appropriately sized radial tires from my parts bins. The chop and stance would look good regardless of what era you chose to model. It all hangs together beautifully. But there is some seriously committed Billetizing going on here. The final result should be one of the better examples of the breed! Most projects in this style are generally done so almost accidentally - the modeler really can't help himself. But this is actually being done intentionally! LOL You realize, of course, you'll have to use some true-to-era colors on this thing?

I particularly like the hood sides, as they add to the smooth look (but have character lines). The model then has a unity to it. I still have trouble with the evolution of large wheels with the "no sidewall" tires. Call me behind the times if you like! Best to you on what will look great when finally finished!

That said, I'm sure you can appreciate the discipline and commitment it's taking for me to stay the billet course. I've held up more traditional wheels and tires to this thing just to see what it would look like and the itch to go that direction was incredibly hard not scratch! As for color, that'll be in keeping. I don't think I can bring myself to put bubblegum pink on it, but it'll be in keeping. I've thumbed through my Dad's 80's Street Rodder issues and not all of the cars were obnoxious colors. Boyd, for example, did reds and yellows that were tasteful. If I didn't hate Testors spray paint so much (the stuff never dries!) I'd be all over the Boyd colors which Pegasus still has a good stock of despite the line being discontinued.

I originally was using solid hood sides because that's the best I had. I texted some pictures to a friend and he said "You have to have 80's hood scoops!" and sent me a pair to graft in. I'm so glad he did, it really completes the look! I'm with you on the giant wheels and small sidewalls, I don't like most of them. Give me 15 inchers and big fat sidewalls any day!

Looks good so far, perfect stance for the style.
I use Boyd's colors all the time with excellent results, very rarely are there any "surprises" but using a dehydrator is a must.

This is cool project Dennis! I really like the rake it has! Are you going to relocate the gas tank and bob off the frame frame rails at the rear? As for color, that'll be in keeping. I don't think I can bring myself to put bubblegum pink on it, but it'll be in keeping. I've thumbed through my Dad's 80's Street Rodder issues and not all of the cars were obnoxious colors. I'd be all over the Boyd colors which Pegasus still has a good stock of despite the line being discontinued. I've seen colors that looked the same as Boyd's by Testors under different names. But, I never paid attention if they were still enamel or switched to lacquer. One of the Boyd colors I really liked was Pacific Blue. Tamiya makes a color that looks like a dead on match that's called Coral Blue. That may be an option.

Good call on the Tamiya counterpart!

I don't like the new Pro Touring/Resto Rod/Street Rod etc building trends. But, coming from your workbench, I'll be watching this one with a great interest as I know it will be awesome, even though stylewise it might not be my favorites. The modifications you've done are looking very good so far. Keep the pics coming!

Good to see you back on this one. It'll look good, no mater what style you choose.
