You know how, at this time of year, there’s a big push for “out with the old, in with the new”? Well, certainly you MUST have known that I would do just the opposite! Just in time for New Years, then, I thought I’d treat everybody to a great remind of just how far we’ve come from some of our darker days in motoring history. Nothing makes the past look better than distance, but it’s still going to take a few years to make anyone miss, pine for or maybe even forgive this horrible little toad of a car: The Daewoo Lemans! Remember when the great LeMans nameplate got stuck onto a horrible sputtering little Korean junkbox? If not, you will when you check out the out of box like below! Have a peek, and be glad that with each passing day, ever fewer of these things can be seen on the roads! Happy New Year! adamrehorn.wordpress.com/model-kits/out-of-box-reviews/academy-124-daewoo-lemans-gse-oob/

I had one 11 years ago, for some reason it was rusted to pieces despite the previous owners attempt to fix it with fibreglass filler and white house paint.

The "gas crises" in the late '60s in the '70s combined with influx of Asian cars never made for U.S. use (driving distances, larger Americans and Winters of salt spreading and potholes) resulted in a lot of resentment. The weakest of the bunch was the Nissan Sunny (or Datsun B-210) fastback. There were many others of the type. The misnamed LeMans wasn't as bad as the B-210. I would enjoy seeing this one built, then I saw the dreaded word "motorized." That means poor interior, terrible undercarriage detail and probably no scale engine up front. Maybe you could combine it with another kit into a real rod.

In fact, the Le Mans was engineered in Germany, it was the 80s version of the Opel Kadett. So, it basically was a successor to what the US got from the buick dealers in the 60s and as the Chevette in the 70s (the 70s Opel Kadett shared body and some mechanics with the Chevette, though not the engine), and used a shorter version of the GM J-body floorpan, so it is not really asian from the start...
But they had a lot of quality issues still, at least the german Opel Kadett, they could rot faster than organic bananas and the camshafts were hard as butter......
