Kevin Harvick - Rookie - #29 with Black Numbers

Now that the big scale is done, thinking to have a little fun and build another quick NASCAR build. One to match my Kevin Harvick Rookie - "Raced version" car. But this time, I will make this as a new car, and using some Slixx decals with the black numbers. This is actually how the car was dressed for Kevin's first race after the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Also found a "Goodies" decal sheet - along with the original decals. Those look a little yellowed, so glad I also have some Goodyear tire decals separate as well...

And got the body a sanding, and the roll cage a painting............

This has always been a build I wanted to do - I can still remember watching the race when this car rolled around the track after Dale passed away. Was a pretty emotional moment for sure, so I want this to come out as nice as I can. I actually have about 3 or 4 more sets of these decals, not sure why, but I do - LOL

Well, got a little more progress....

Most black parts sprayed, I used Krylon Fusion / Satin Black. LOVE this stuff. A couple coats, and it lays so nice and levels off great. Then if I need the piece flat, a coat of dull clear does the trick, want it shiny gloss - slap some high gloss clear on it. GREAT STUFF!



The body is ready, dried and cured nicely.
Plan to start some body painting, (spoiler - lower edges, etc), and maybe some decals this weekend. Along with starting the engine and roll cage.

Take your time. A good model is worth taking and enjoying the time. I never thought of semi gloss black!

No problem there bud, taking my time for sure! Especially since yesterday, Friday, I pulled a 14 hour shift, and then an extra 10 hours today! Man, am I draggin! Lol
But I will try to get a little done tomorrow. But I could not agree with you more, I do not like to rush the fun of a build!

ok, let me first offer my apologies for being absent from this fine club. I kind of let myself get wrapped up on another forum, and when my laptop at home took a dump, I just never logged back on. I have this build completed, along with another that I will post up a bench and finished thread. But I do apologize for being absent.....

I will post the in-progress pictures, with a few details, then I will make a thread in the Finished section

Engine coming along, combination of aluminum paint, and chrome silver paint, coated in future. I had to bend the plug wires and held them down with rubber bands overnight to stay in place, then added the valve covers, carb and air cleaner. Also got started on the front suspension, tires are ready for decals, dash is painted, not sure if I will decal the gauges or just hand paint them like I usually do. Firewall is painted and detailed, pedals on, getting prepared for roll cage assembly. Of course, tons of touch up on the engine and everywhere else to follow.

Some tire progress, first, sanded off the stamp on the tires

Then a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol, setting them aside afterwards a day or two to dry completely

Time to start the decals, cutting them out can sometimes be as big a challenge as applying them!

I usually start with the smaller "Eagle" ones, then go to the "Goodyear" decals

Once they have dried a few minutes, gave them a couple coats of dull coat Testors

Then over to the body decals - good thing I had no less than (3) sets of these decals, as they were crap!! I had to fix, and re-apply over and over again to finally get something that looked acceptable. Kind of surprising as these were Slixx decals, guess they just simply got old...

Opening up the second set.....

Trying to use what I can, hood decals ran a bit after clearing - grrr - live-able I guess

Cracking open the (3rd) and final set....

Some slight cracking - nothing that cannot be repaired - back to the tires for some inner tire decals. Putting them on some temporary rims....

Some progress on the interior, ventilation hoses installed as well

Some more progress on decals - re-decals from the ones that tore, touch up, etc

Finalized the tire decals - 4 little decals on each rim - Crazy man, pics not so great, but hard to capture these teeny things! LOL

A final coast of flat and then gloss will pretty these right up!

And then - BLAMO! the front fender cracked on me good! Ugh - will repair as best I can....

During fender repairs, more decal tearing - just about ready to shoot this thing... LOL

On the bright side, the car itself is just about complete, engine, exhaust, shocks, etc done - leaving the dash and touch up yet

99% of the decals done, still on the mission for saving the front fender...

And time to finish the car and install the dash

Dash installed, radiator in, upper and lower hoses are on - front wheels blocked and drying...

Reinstalled the front nose guard, it broke off when the hood cracked. Also, had to yet again re-apply some decals - a reacuuring theme indeed on this build. Also started the painting of the window trim

Started on the windows, some to have decals, and to make some time, I will use sharpies to detail the rest...

Windows in - and onto touch up - will post up a finished thread with nicer pictures soon
