If you've ever made something to chuck in a drill you know how hard it is to get the proper size by wrapping tape around something and keeping the tire straight and . . . well you know what I'm saying ! I even quit doing it because it's more trouble than it's worth and just sanded my tires by hand . Then I was looking in the faucet repair section at Ace Hardware and saw these cone shaped washers for about a buck a pair ! They are hard rubber and grip the tire without over tightening , just finger tight works fine . As a bonus they automatically center the tire ! And with just a little nudging while tightening the hex nut the tire will spin straight and true . I use a variable speed drill set on " slow " and fine sandpaper , I even cut grooves in these slicks with a razor saw with no problem at all ! Oh , and don't use reverse or the nut will fly off !

Great tip! I've got a tool I bought at a model car swap meet years ago that someone made on a lathe out of aluminum. It wasn't expensive but your idea is cheaper and maybe simpler. Now I have an excuse to go to the hardware store. (You can't have too many tire sanders)
