With the weather getting too cold to paint outside and to keep peace on the home front it's time for a spray booth. I had the tubs kicking around the basement and a trip to Home Depot got the rest. The fan is a $14 50cfm bathroom unit, a 75 or 100 cfm would probably be better. The hose is 8'X3" for $9, the bigger cfms would change the hose to 4". For filters I got their cheapest spun glass, 4 for $3 and cut to fit under the intake grill. The tubs measure 24"X16"X11" and 15"X10"X5". Right now the hose is just stuck out a basement window till I do something more permanent. This doesn't eliminate all the fumes but it sure helps allot.

That's a great idea! I need to come up with something also since my painting time is form about the end of May to around September if I'm lucky. I can do little pieces but not anything big like a body during the winter months.
I was looking at your set up and wondered if it would be better if the vent was in the back(bottom of tub) since that's the direction your spraying.

From what I read on the internet downdraft booths are preferable. Of course, as we all know, everything on the net is true.

I've seen some DIY booths on the web and they look good. Only caution I would have is to make sure the fan is a sealed unit (not open to air) as paint will both damage it and can lead to ignition of the fumes as the fan runs. Also, a filter is useful to keep the duct and eventual outlet clean. Finally, venting in back or top seems preferred way to go, though these days we can and do polish out dust for remarkable finishes (way better than the old days!) Thanks.
