As most everyone knows, yesterday fotki.com was down.
Nobody knew what was going on and even fotki was "hoping"
to get it resolved.
This is something I have feared for some time now. I would really
hate to see all of the photos disappear! Marc, Mj and I have talked
about back it all up onto cd's and an external hard drive. The problem
is, cd's are kinda hard to keep track of at least at my house. The other
problem is the amount of money a hard drive costs vs. what I can afford.
With that said, I thought I would see how much it matters to members here
that want to make sure fotki images never get lost.
Aside the photos of Gold member models, there are other photos
that cannot be replaced. I can't count the group photos that were taken
at various shows, the memories etc...
Then we have the instructions and box art archive! That alone is the largest
and only thing of it's kind on the internet. I would probably go into hiding for
a year if that stuff got lost....literally I couldn't bare to think of how much work
has gone into that for the benefit of this hobby!
So here is my solution.
1. buy external hard drives for the staff to back up and save all files to.
2. ask for donations from the club to pay for them.
I can't see any other way to do it. I couldn't save it all to my hard drive with
the web site and tons of other stuff I have on it already. At least on an external, it
can be moved and saved even if the computer crashed.
If you want to help fund these hard drives, we need at least 2-3 of them.
Marc and I discussed this before. I would save and back up all of the web site
stuff that is stored on fotki and he would back up the Gold members photos.
If you want to make a donation, I will hold a fund for the hard drives and when
the amount needed is reached, I will post photos and receipts for everyone to
see.
Any help is appreciated!
If interested in helping , please PM me as I don't want to miss your reply.
(Gold membership discounted dues are coming up in October, watch for the
email notifications!)
Thanks and I hope everyone has a good holiday, keep up the great work!
This email was sent to the group in our club as well. Any non-members are more than welcome to support this cause.
