This was inspired by another 57 Ranchero I found in one of the back pages in TRAK. I'm starting with the AMT 57 Fairlane, with parts of the custom pickup roof from the AMT 55 Nomad. I had to widen the Nomad piece about an eighth of an inch. I chopped the windshield pillars about 3 scale inches. I'll be modifying the shape of the "B" pillars, squaring them up at the rear corners and working on the rear window shape too. I left the rear of the roof a little high and I'll tweak it later on to even up the side window openings. It won't be glued onto the body 'till later on. I'm pretty much on my own for the pickup bed floor and sides, but I'll take a trip to the local Hobbytown and look through their Evergreen for something I might be able to use. I plugged the hood ornament hole and I found a scoop in my junk that looks kinda like a T-Bird scoop and I'll probably be using that. I haven't looked into the wheel/tire combo yet, but I've been thinking about the custom wheels from the Revell 50 Ford pickup. I haven't decided yet whether I'll de-chrome the body, but at any rate I will remove the emblems. I'm open to any ideas you have so let's hear them! Gary

Hey Gary that is a very cool concept. As a suggestion for something unique, how about doing a wooden bed floor with chrome slats?? I think that would look really cool, and it was never done on models that new. Then use sheet styrene for the bed sides, front, and tailgate?? Show some updates soon.

Gary, You Ranchero is looking Great. I like the 55 Nomad parts you are using. Here are pics of my conversion - Same 57 Fairlane kit converted to the Ranchero. Looking forward to your completed pics. thanks, Larry

Larry, thanks for the pictures of your Ranchero. It's nice to see how the same basic idea is interpreted by someone else. Ron, I haven't even thought of what color (or colors?) I might be going for. Like Larry's conversion above, I think the real Ranchero would have straight, horizontal, bed sides whereas mine follow the contour of the body. It's a phantom/custom anyway so I went in my own direction. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Gary

I spent a lot of time on this in the last few days, stopping on everything else I have in the works. The bed cover took a whole day, start to finish. The diamond is 1 1/2" X 1 3/4", and all the rolls are .100 (2.5mm) half round Evergreen strips. The center piece was made from .060 Evergreen, and when I had the shape and size right, I sanded it down to the same height as the half round (.050). It's .136 across from side to side and I held it in my fingers to file and then sand it, and I gotta tell you it gets pretty hard to hold something that small while you're trying to file and sand! Anyway, this is the first time it's been up on wheels, and I like it a lot but I think I might drop the front a little bit more. Next comes the inside of the bed and maybe some way to hinge the bed cover. Also, I'm really thinking of a full dechroming on the sides. If anybody thinks that's a bad idea, let me know here. You may have noticed that I'm putting a rolled pan on the rear. I gotta balance the length a bit 'cause making it into a pickup makes the rear end look too long. I changed the name to "57 Rancheroo", because this looks like a possible UTE from Down Under. Gary
