Wal-Mart has models again at some stores. I stopped by the one here that has them, and only bought a 67 Chevelle Pro Street for $14.99. There were a few that I liked, but not enough to spend $19.99 to $24.99 for them. I think I have pretty much everything I could build till the day I die. I'd probably change my mind if I could find a '70 Coronet Pro Street, '60 Starliner, '64 Bonneville convertible, and maybe a few others, at a price I'd be willing to pay. I'd still probably make the 340 mile round trip to Ollie's when they have models, though.
What do you guys look for and do you still plan on building up a big stash?

340 miles roundtrip worth of gasoline buys a lot of models at not so cheap prices.
Just sayin.

I'll take a stab at answering your question.
I started getting back into the hobby about five or so years ago and had only a few kits stashed (maybe 20-30). They were a few cars that interested me to built as skills refreshers, and the rest cars that were meaningful in my life or racing cars with a Canadian connection (you can guess my country-of-origin).
Since then I have added to the collection to the point I have close to 100 kits. However, about 1/3 of the kits are parts cars to build certain versions of cars or provide better details for certain parts of the vehicle I want to build. I have been very diligent to not buy any more kits, even if I find the vehicle interesting as I want to focus on the themes of meaningful/Canadian racers, and do not want the guilt in leaving many of my kits un-built or unfinished. So I guess I am at peak kit purchases.
Hope that helps.

To answer the question, for myself anyhow:
>What do you guys look for and do you still plan on building up a big stash?
I don't really look for anything anymore, but that doesn't mean I don't jump on certain things when I see them. Some current reissues, but not many, some JDM variations, and vintage kits once in a while. Other than that, mostly just kool resin kits or transkits, and the base kits to complete them.
A big stash? Define "big". I have plenty of kits, probably a couple hundred (conservative estimate). So, not huge but maybe "big". I don't expect to build them all but thats beside the point. If I want em, I get em, basically. I never "plan" much, it just happens. I never planned on having a "big" collection, it just happens. As long as I have room to store them and not have them get in the way too much, I'm kool with it. And whenever I need parts I feel free to pilfer them. Very little is sacred.
Its gotten to the point, though, that I can go to a major model swap meet and not feel obligated to buy junk just because its there. I already got most of the "junk" I want, now if anything I want rare kits, mostly to build not collect. But again, probably not going to have time to build most of them, let my heirs figure it out. That's what dumpsters were made for, to be brutally honest. Can't take it with you, and for the most part, most of what is on most peoples' shelves is also down at the wallie world or hobby lobby or whatever anyhow, going for 40% off list on a regular basis. Not going to be able to sell what you got, even for bargain prices, in the vast majority of cases.
I am basically in it for the fun, not to build a legacy. Easy come, easy go. Story of my life.

I agree with JB. I do have a very large collection amassed over 55 years ,but only a 1/3 it automotive. The balance is split pretty even between specific aircraft and ships. Most all of the ships are iron clads to WWI and early WWII. I still buy a ship or car kit when they interest me. I also have almost a dozen "collector" cars and 4 motorcycles, all of which are already spoken for to The Owls Head museum and Coles transport Museum. I enjoy them and honestly, when I'm gone who cares, let them do what ever they want, sell them ,toss them give them away what ever suits them. My only worry is that my wife and Inky the Kat are taken care of.

I've hit my peak on building, Spray paints are £6 here and the shipping is the same. Too expensive for me!
