I can still remember, some 55 years later, of the first time our Dad took me and my brother to Alan's Toy Store, and I saw models! Dad didn't buy us any, but I remember seeing the very cool box art of those Monogram models, like this 1995 reissue of the Drag Strip Hot Rod.
I finally got it, about 10 years ago, and only paid $36 for it.... π
Just saw it going for $46 yesterday.
I started out planning on making it exactly like the box art..... but....
I just couldn't. Once I cut the extra header pipe off both sides, I just had to add a little here, take a little there, but I did make it close to the box art.
Being one of my early models, shortly after getting back into car models, I knew some things, and thought I knew some other things. The big orange wrong way brake drums on the front wheels are one of the things I THOUGHT was right π¬π
I used coffee stirrer tubes for stacks atop the carbs. I tried drilling holes in the radiator to simulate sheet metal, until I realized that I had drilled away the front leaf spring.... π²π
So I used a spare louvered hood side panel for the "grill".
Opened up the one rear wheel slots, added a center, and a valve stem. Just put a full moon disc in the other one. Put some bolt holes in the front full discs.....
The maroon plastic was a trip. Old molds made lining up of most parts impossible, without removing the locator pins. Loved the red goo from the melded plastic. The decals went on well, but as can be seen, the white #2 is pretty translucent. All in all, it was a fun build, and I have thought of getting another one to build like I would have built it- gluebombed it- without paint, as a snot nosed little me π
Thanks for looking.
