Yet another a bit older one from my display case. Not up to today's standards, plus just like the Nomad I posted, I never was completely happy with this one either.
I bought this from FCMA Open Model Car Show in 2010. It had only body with doors cut open, chassis pan and interior bucket. Next year's theme class in that same show was going to be "Finland", so my plan was to build a typical '80s style Hot Rod with jacked up rear end and lots of "important equipment" everywhere. In the '80s that kind of cars were very popular here in Finland and you could see them a lot when going to a Cruise Night.
I started by finding a set of wheels and tires. They had to look like something that was popular back then, and I found these. Then I widened the body from both, front and rear fenders. Very little from front and a bit more from back using styrene and putty. As the doors were cut open, I decided to try my hand at making opening doors so door hinges were made out of MIG welding machine's welding wire. Then I wanted an L88 scoop to the hood, as those were pretty common on many cars back then. I found one, but it had to be shortened to fit properly on the hood. A lot of work went into the body to get it smooth as it was a bit rough.
Engine was built completely from parts found in my parts box. I added some speed parts to it, but not too much since speed parts were not easy to find here in Finland back then, plus they were relatively expensive. I detailed the engine as well as I could and to be honest, I still like how it looks.
Interior was pretty much robbed from Revell's '67 Corvette Convertible that I'm building as an early Concept Car/Custom. I added seat belts, but otherwise it's pretty simple.
Chassis required a lot of work to get everything fit. Rear axle was taken from my parts box and it had to be modified to fit on place. Front suspension is from Revell '57 Nomad and it had to be sliced to million pieces before it fit to Corvette. Chassis was painted to US Flag colors, it was another popular thing back then.
Body was painted with a spray can and after decals I shot some clear on it. I didn't have a polishing kit at that time, so I just waxed the body before moving on to BMF. I remember there was some trouble in final assembly but I got it together after I had scratchbuilt a new rear window from sheet plastic. Mud flaps are printed on regular paper, as there was an idiotic rule here in Finland back then that every single car had to have mud flaps. Those in my Corvette are probably the most popular ones, the legendary "Back Off Mud Flaps".
I never was 100% happy with it. Especially co-driver's door doesn't line up with the body exactly when it's closed. It's not too bad, but it bothers me so it's usually open when this thing is displayed.
