Got involved into a NASCAR Members Challenge on another forum - so instead of something I am familiar with, (probably NOT the smartest move), I decided to try this Richard Petty Ford Torino Talladega by Polar Lights. A tad worried, as I have heard there will be some fitment issues coming, but I did want to try a polar lights NASCAR kit. The kit offers (2) engine choices, the normal 427 and the Boss 429 - I am planning to go with the Boss 429 motor. Gonna keep it strictly "box stock" so to try and finish on time AND see what I think of Polar lights NASCAR kits.
Opening for inspection - crap, was hoping it was blue - so it's off to find what I can do to come up with the "elusive and top secret blend" for the Petty Blue
Crop circles and flash sanded, initial primer on - the piece in the center is some spare plastic I will be using to get a Petty Blue match
Wet sanded, final prime laid, wet sanding and my version of Petty Blue to come. Also, started to gray up the chassis and parts. Found and used a weird "Warm Gray" spray can in my hoard of sprays - I think I like it. Not bad for free, (I get a lot of model paints, sprays, etc from our local drop off recyclables in our town). Should get some more progress on this build by the weekend.

Not really a bad kit and I don't remember any real fitment problems . Everybody complains about the drooping body forward of the front wheel openings . . . I can see it but I hate to get that picky about a kit . And I see a can of Tamiya spray paint there , both French Blue and Light Blue look really good to me . I've used both and unless you gotta have the real color they'll look fine . Looking forward to seeing your progress !

Good eye there toold
Yep, going to use a base of bright blue, (it's actually pretty dark), then final top coats of Tamiya French Blue, (wet sanding between them all of course) I usually start with the 2800 for the primer - then I immediately bump up to 4000, then 6000 - all the way to 12000 before the last wet coat.
I think it will be close enough for the girls I go with - LOL

Without a doubt ! I restored an old MPC Petty Charger using Bright blue and have been asked where I found the Petty Blue !

Engine block done in Model Masters Ford Engine Blue Got most of the roll cage painted up and ready to start putting together, I used a dark blue for this, just to be different. I am going to give the blue rims a coat or two of Tamiya smoke, to give them that "raced" look.
Also, mist the hood and body with bright blue, wet sanded, another mist of bright blue, and while that was wet, used Tamiya French Blue. Wet sanded and coated again in French Blue. May just wet sand one more time, and one more wet coat of French Blue - then allow this to harden up before decals.

Got after some spraying parts / trees today. Also coated the chrome in some "Future" it's called Pledge Floor Care Finish now-a-days, but works great to keep the finger prints off the shiny bits. Also, very lightly, under running water, did a final wet sand, and laid the last wet coat of Tamiya French Blue, (close as I can get to Petty Blue). Of course, wouldn't you know it, "NOW" I find a flash/molding line, oh well, some things in life we just have to live with, Lol

Finally found an actual, "In Race" picture, AND shows the optional 7-Up decals. Gonna go this route I do believe....
Work coming along on the car / roll cage / engine pretty much complete, short of headers.
Lettering and putting together the tires - Sprayed the rims dark blue, then sprayed with Testors black/dark window tint, to give them that darker race look. Will hit the lug nuts with some flat black as well. Rims cleared with gloss, then with flat, for that satin, yet shiny effect. Probably will never know it unless the build is in the sun, while the star is at the right height in the sky, with the correct constellations circling, and at that particular "off" second of the earth's orbit to see this subtlety, but hey, it's what we do! LOL Oh yeah, hand lettered the tires with the in-famous white gelly pen...

Making a little more head way on this one - so far, NOT real impressed with Polar Lights and this NASCAR kit, Revell does much nicer work on these. Oh well, it's only plastic right, LOL. Engine is basically completed, short of the headers, dash hand painted gauges, etc - etc... I "was" thinking to paint the window trim and body stuff with aluminum paint form the jar, BUT, I am now considering using a "Matte Aluminum" BMF - thoughts anyone?

Looking good so far. I would definitely go with BMF for the trim, also strip the chrome from the head covers and intake and go with a dull aluminum like finish.

Took a couple days off this week for the wife, (she had a procedure today), so I added tomorrow as well, figure may as well sneak in a 4 day weekend. I was gonna do the BMF, but went and painted the trim this afternoon - came out pretty good actually. I will get some pics up as soon as the decals and clear coat are done tomorrow / Saturday. I do like your idea for "aluminizing" the engine, I will see what I can do, as the darn thing is all glued together now. Maybe some dull clear coat on it may help bring in the realism. Or better yet, a little Tamiya smoke brushed on may just do the trick!

With the window trim all hand painted - laid the decals last night. Yes I know, not "historically" correct, but with the decals offered in this kit, I figured, what the hay - lets make our own version. Honestly, you never can be sure, this could have been a paint / decal scheme at a race back in the day. Races back then, well, lets just say if you had 50 bucks, and a couple of contingency stickers, they would slap them on the car for you, just for that one race. So, you never really know, maybe I nailed a race paint scheme from long gone by! Cleaning and touch-up, and clear coat to come today...

Catching everyone up on this build - clear coat went on great......
After letting this set aside a day, I then started to get after finishing this up, only to find out the headers were molded wrong! BACKWARDS! It was like having (2) right side sets of headers, that were wrong fitting together as well. But "finagled" them in, engine set, rear end installed, rims and tires, etc-etc-etc
Then came the ANGER FACTOR, the rumors were all true, the front end on this body does indeed have a slight, skyward roll, and in no shape and form was this fitting. In my "FURY", I decided to glue bomb the engine rails and used a clip, that made so many crinks and pops when I put it on, I was for sure thinking this was gong to turn into a wrecked, in the wall, diorama build!
After letting this set in the clip for nearly 39 hours, being smashed, I removed the clip, and what do ya know - it seems to be alright. As good as it will get anyways. I managed to re-attach everything that came off during the "FURY" storm, and am planning to get the bumpers on and finished this weekend - MUST REMOVE THIS FROM THE BENCH. In the second picture, you can still see the slight upward roll to the front of the car, don't care anymore, just want it wrapped up and out of the way! LOL

This is very interesting to follow as I have the same kit in my stash waiting to be built. The front fenders on mine are bent up as well, and that's probably the main reason why I haven't started it yet as I'm not sure if I can fix that problem or not. Yours is looking very good. Decals laid on nicely and clear coat looks very good too. Nice and clean work in the engine bay and interior too.
