This is something I have had on my mind for a while now, taking the pickup cab from the Revell 29 Ford "rat rods" kit, and fitting it to a ridiculously short frame with a big mill. The big mill I was messing with earlier, a rarish 409 from the first AMT 63 Impala issue, got cleaned up some, the hole in the block filled and some other improvements, and its back for its possible debut in this rod. I also think I will kind of lean to the "rat" side of things on this one but I will see how that goes, I don't really like rat just for the sake of rat, and leaving a body in primer kind of bothers me. So I took a frame from the Tweedy Pie, cut the rear spring mount off, Z'ed it up in the air, and replaced it with a different one for a reason I don't really recall. Still needs some smoothing but its straight and flat and most of the rear is going to be hidden up inside the body. There isn't going to be much out back but I think a very abbreviated version of the Revell kit bed with a fairly large fuel tank. I want it stubby. Here are some early shots of what I have in mind, totally just fitting stuff together and looking for appropriate running gear and wheels and tires. Going to construct a simple interior with flocked floorboards and some kustom seats. Its just going to evolve as it evolves, no grand plans. Engine block more or less resting in place: body resting on chassis after channeling job: I am thinking about shaving all the door hinges off the body, adding a drilled visor over the windscreen, maybe molding in a kustom dashboard and making some tuck and roll door panels and headliner. Kinda defeats the rat rod thing though and that's what I mean about it might not keep going that direction. alright thanks for looking and as always any comments appreciated! jb

Looking good so far. Nice channel too. I'm seeing this one in a natural metal finish.

What to do with all those Revell '29/'30 Ford RPU/Sedan parts kits... This so very much reminds me of an early and funky effort I did for the 2009 NNL West. Unchopped body, short wheelbase and low stance, included. Mine was definitely ratty because the theme that year was "Rats & Tats". I never really clicked with that ,many people and I still don't know why, since it remains one of my favorites despite its definite technical deficiencies. "Technical deficiencies" is NOT something we'll see from you. I'm looking forward to seeing what this concept looks like properly done. Can't wait for more, more, more...
As I wrote this I realized I hadn't ever posted it here on DPMCC. It's a Rat Rod most definitely and not allowed on our sister site. I didn't want to post it here on your thread so I will post it seperately. Have a look at it. Maybe it might encourage/dissuafe you from ideas you maybe considering, LOL.

Bernard, please do post it here, unless you really want its own thread. It will give me some inspiration and I would like to see how you handled the various problems that always come up. I won't copy you, promise (with crossed fingers behind my back!)
About the metal finish, its something I might consider, its just very difficult to get that looking right, both in real life and in scale. Not sure how I would approach it though, maybe Metalizer paint? Awfully fragile though. But as Bernard implied, we all got these bodies coming out our ears so at least I could use a mule body for the fitting etc and keep from handling the metalizer one. Worth thinking about...
The biggest challenge right now in my mind is what to do with the rear wheels. Might stick out way to much if I put them outboard of the body, but the alternatives will be "tubbing" the body at least mildly (don't really want to do), or extending the rear more than I really want to. So tonite maybe I will mess around with rear wheel placement.
Thanks for the comments folks, always appreciated.

About the metal finish, its something I might consider, its just very difficult to get that looking right, both in real life and in scale. jb Bill, I've developed a technique for baremetal finish that works pretty well. You should check out. Below is my most recent example, from earlier this year (see: drasticplastics.proboards.com/thread/6229/bare-metal-ford-highboy-roadster ). I've done others, too, and the system is pretty consistent a repeatable. I'll post a how-to here in a moment about it. Among my baremetals is a '34 Pickup from a few years back which can be found here: drasticplastics.proboards.com/thread/5447/ford-pickup-bare-metal-bobber . I never showed it at the 2017 NNL because it was DOA as part of a 4-model wipeout that year.

Engine block being roughed out and painted...posed in chassis thanks for looking! jb

Smoothed and painted the chassis, it may stay this color but I anticipate respraying it at least once more before final construction. I think engine will get done this week and then some particulars of the running gear to sort out. I think I will use the Kelsey Hayes wire wheels from the Monogram woody for this one, should fit the mood. But now the mystery trend beckons... Thanks for looking and all comments encouraged! jb

Thanks mustang man, heres a little update mostly just posing the body on chassis with engine in place some suspension and running gear still to figure out but its starting to look pretty good. Not positive I will keep the Kelsey Hayes wires, but they do look good with the whitewalls. Thanks for looking and as always comments appreciated! jb

That is a really cool looking truck!! I like the fact that you are using an engine that most would just toss out. Now my question, why is it "rarish"? I'm working on a AMT 63 Impala and except for the seperate head/intake it looks the same. Robert

Thanks folks, Robert, I said it was rarish because my understanding is that the valve covers and intake (which is what I really like about it) were only in the first issue of that 63 Impala. So maybe not "rare", but pretty "rarish" to my mind anyway. I looked around for a mint replacement but finally gave up and used the ratted one I had and tried to clean it up as best I could as well as fill the axle hole in the block and oil pan. I think it will end up looking pretty good. And I like the idea of boat-anchor mills in rods like this and I think that 409 qualifies as a boat-anchor!
The top chop is actually still under consideration, cannot figure where to take the 3/16" or so out though...I would go through the window but its too small already, so maybe below it? There still needs to be considerable body work done, at least chopping off and smoothing the hinges and maybe filling and rescribing the door lines. So the future is unwritten in that regard.
