Thanks folks, I was getting pretty down about this project but managed to pull it out of the fire. The body sits too far forward on the chassis for the rear wheels to line up with the wells. I can get it to sit better but then it sits up too high. Its the windshield bottom vs the dashboard, and I managed to trim those two pieces away so now the body can sit back a bit more and it looks a lot better. Not exactly how I planned it, still sits higher than I wanted, but it looks decent. Now if I can only epoxy it together like that; got to turn it upside down and see where some good contact points are. Might even commit that later today, got a bit sidetracked on another project for a minute there.
And Ron, maybe you got a race! This thing belongs next to a Mustang or Falcon or something! Went to some nostalgia drags last weekend and I was amazed at how many Novas were in line there, and one very sharp black 63 pretty much mopped the place up.

Pretty much wrapped this baby up, here are a couple of initial pics, I will create a thread in the Completed section as soon as I work out some lighting problems. Its pretty difficult to get something like this lit properly and it is really crowding my photo booth so some flexibility may be necessary! The wagon isn't 100% my work though I renovated it and added an engine, so it isn't the focus of the project anyway, and can be minimized in the photos I suppose. You might notice I added the For Sale sign, what independent race car isn't for sale? Anyway thanks for looking and any comments are appreciated! Mandatory post-build self-flagellation session: Body sits too far forward by about an eighth inch...tachometer vs glass is likely culprit, I struggled with grinding down the glass and it helped some but body still needs to come back some. Most obvious giveaway is rear tire not centered in wheel arch like I would like it. But its close. Also the nose sits a little higher than I wanted it to, that is also related to body position on chassis. But again, its close. Body to chassis/interior tub connection and fastening is tenuous, I expect it will break if I keep moving it around by holding the body. The hood could have been better, like I pointed out earlier, the hole is too big and not really where I liked it. It does fit the body and grille pretty well though, I managed to massage most of the potato chip effect out of it. But I have dropped it at least a half dozen times and its a miracle its not chipped up. So I expect to maybe replace it at some point. Finally, the trailer sits too low, I should have used some larger wheels and tires and I might swap them out if I can find some appropriate reversed steel wheels, I could not when I initially looked around for some but maybe if I look harder... And I just scored another station wagon partial build that I may strip down and build a more correct, and a bit better painted, tow vehicle. But first I have to get back to my kustom wagon in another thread and finish that one up! Thanks again for your interest! jb

As I have a real '62 Chevy II that I'm building as a Gasser (or at least I hope that it will match the rules when it's done), I really like how these turned out! The racer is very nicely done, but I think I like the Wagon even more. Probably because we don't see many of those built.
Even though some of these AWB cars in the 60s ran with FX class markings on their side, this kind of cars were never allowed in the Factory Experimental classes. But several of these AWB Match Race cars were built from former FX cars, so some of them had the old FX class markings still on the car. I don't know what that XS class was, but it was often seen on these cars. So it fits perfectly on your build as well.

thanks Niko (and others of course), the A/XS was on the decal sheet that originally came with the race car team, so I did a little research to see if it was appropriate. What I found was that XS was used for what then became known as Funny Cars, but hadn't as yet really established that identity and were not nearly as evolved as what came to be. As you mention, the altered wheelbase cars were not allowed in FX classes, so they made this XS class to accommodate them. I think the class only lasted a few years, to be replaced by either just plain match/exhibition races, or, I think, a different special class for the Funny Car, which had by then evolved to full tube chassis, massive tubs and slicks and other things. This car was meant to represent a simpler time when the AWB car was still in the hands of backyard mechanics, and the cars themselves were only modified stock bodies with a big engine but still a fairly extensive interior and stock-based chassis and running gear, augmented of course for the race track. Or that's the way I got it anyway. So, on went the A/XS decals (I believe the "A" refers to engine size, this 396/427 being pretty much the top end in those days; if i recall correctly "AA" stood for a big engine that was supercharged), which I like anyway just for the excess (XS). By the way, i am open for corrections on these details since most of it is recalled from my youth in the sixties, only slightly refreshed by what i read in Wikipedia recently.
