Alrighty then. I figured I might as well start with one of my scratchbuilds, since Bernard spilled my beans.... π After seeing and having some of the Kool snapper Willys drag kits, inspiration struck, as it usually does, and on one visit to my LHS, I got one of the Lindberg 1/32 kits: the '49 Ford Tudor, with visions of 5' tall slicks inside the wheel wells and the body distorted by torque from the big honking horsepower maker hanging out all over..... LOL! Yeah, and that vision stuck with me for a few years, but the idea of how to heat & beat that shoebox into monster coolness, without ruining it, didn't really resolve itself until last year sometime when I had my own Facebook page, NumbThumb Johnny's MODELWORKS, where I finally did build it up. Then the place burned down..... I think I have some WIP pictures, and if/when I find them, I will dump them in an album on my Fotki page. In the meantime, enjoy these pictures I just took yesterday, and did some Photoshop-ing to today. Only kit pieces are: Body, grill, and bumpers from Lindy's little kit, and the guitar player from one of the HAWK Frantics series, Totally Fab. Everything else is made from scratch mostly, with a little modified parts box bits (bomb), and the cap off an eyedrop bottle for the bell housing and tranny tail piece. "Chrome" is Silver paste rubbed on gloss black painted parts- zoomies, front wheels, etc, then buffed. Too much fun. Thanks for checking it out. John

Now that you've all met Bryce, here are some pictures of some details..... Oh yeah, his helmet started life as a ping pong ball. I love the Masterpiece Theater series: UXB, about the bomb disposal units sent out to defuse Adolf's unexploded bombs during WWII in London and thereabouts. Some very cool vintage vehicles in the show, and I just get a kick out of the language. I didn't purposely design Bryce to be a UXB gasser bloke, but as in my most favorite kind of scratchbuilding, things just happen as the build goes on- sometimes good, sometimes not. John That's a Qtip stuffed up in the zoomie, then the cotton was pulled out some and colored by brushing ground pastel dusts on the cotton. The brushing/coloring process also helped refine the shape. I made the front tires by layering up .030"(?) styrene ovals, big and little, to get the tread depth, then rounded all the edges, heated a circle of styrene for the wheel, cut out the kidneys and heated & dished it on a tool handle. Since I'm not hitting my caption targets here on my Android, I will just add a bit here.... The slicks were the starting point. Basically just "boxes" made up, to pose under the shoebox body to see if it was going to work, and to help guide my heating and distorting the poor thing. Once it was a go..... Oh man! Cut up pieces of ping pong ball used for the inner tubes inside the slicks. Too much fun fabbing up the zoomies, and they were the guinea pig for the silver paste over gloss black chrome idea. Just heated and stretched styrene tubing basically. Front dropsy axle just styrene rod, with stretched sprue steering linkage, tie rods, etc. Just pull some hot sprue thin, bend it here n' there before it cools, and you got linkage π Love scratching leafy springs, especially this kind. I could go on & on, but..... John

Well then... Now I know what you've been up to since our paths last crossed. I've always enjoyed how you deal with the wheels (ohhhh.......). That little 1/32 Shoebox is the key, not only because it's a funky Fordor, but because it's scale makes everything else look so urgently, Explosively, HUGE. My fave detail is the mass of carb scoops bursting out of the hood. And of course Bryce riding to the rescue!

WOW!! You must be the fella who built that wild Tiki-themed gasser vette a number of years ago. Love that thing! This build is equally impressive. I love the expressively modeled scratchbuilt parts...very sculptural and dynamic; it's simply leaping off the table! I also love this for another reason--I almost built a Lindberg '49 into a cartoon gasser a couple years ago, with some castoff slicks and a chunky supercharger glued to the hood, but decided to make it a Kustom instead, and always kinda regretted not following through on the idea. Now I can see my vision was severely limited...I was imagining about a 7 out of 10 on the Crazy scale, and this thing is an 11!

Thanks guys.
That Tiki Vette sounds Kool, but tweren't me. Would like to see it though. I've done the same- not gone for it at times, but oh so gratifying when you do. Thanks for the 11 dude π
Ah Bernard.... You've a way with the plastic, and the words! "Simply urgently explosively huge..." ππππ. Thanks. Glad you dig the carb stacks. Simple, but so Kool.
Thank you too Bob, much appreciated. I scratchbuild what my vivid imagination imagineers. That's why I love it so. Always nice when my comrades like it too. π

Wow that thing is incredible! This is a good example that you can turn a poor kit into a very cool model with some imagination and modifying. This build has so many cool details that I had to check out the pictures a couple of times before posting. Very nice work, definitely one of the best builds that I've seen from this kit.

Thanks man.
I wasn't sure about the whole bomb/gas tank thing up front, but I went with it.
Almost "too many" details, but....
Not sure if I did consider not putting the whole gas tank assembly on, letting the grill show more. Guess even if I did, that crazy Bryce dude insisted that I leave it the way he wanted... π
Might just have to make another one, for him to race. He seems to be looking at someone in the other lane....

I built some of the early kits, but never got into it enough to do the fine job you did here. Luv the "flames" out the pipes!

Thanks guys. Wasn't sure going in, how it was going to go, being 1/32 scale. Not to worry though.... that's what's so very cool about free-form scratchbuilding.

This is freakin' cool! Great imagination and resourcefulness.
Kinda reminds me of those old Hawk "Weird-Ohs!" kits.

Hey you old fart. How the heck you been. I thought you might have died on me. Glad to see you're still kickin. One minute you were there and the next you were gone with no explanation. It's good to see you're still buildin stuff. George asked about you, but I had nothing to tell him. You should come see us at scottsmancave.proboards.com/index.cgi? George I know would love to here from you. Catch ya later buddy.
