Oh what a joy it is to build a Tamiya kit after fiddling around with resin and ancient AMT kits! Saw a writeup of this kit somewhere and just had to have one. They are pretty dear on the bay but I decided to splurge and drop sixty on this kit including shipping, not too bad relative to what some are asking for them. Relatively simple kit, but impressive interior detail and race car parts. Am going to build it as a race wagon but not a specific BTCC car, just a phantom car that looks nice. Tamiya Camel Yellow paint with black trim is what I have planned. Chassis is detailed and done (skid plates cover the engine and front end area so there is not much to see and the rear is quite simplified), wheels and tires are done. Last night I detailed and assembled the seat (10 decals and three colors) and detailed the electronic component board, and am currently preparing the interior panels and dash. Then its on to the body. Quick and clean, don't plan on putting more than two weeks time into it (yeah sure that's what you said last time). The box art if you can make it out: Body in a raw state: Chassis: Wheels and tyres: And the seat...some more detailing to be done and then hit with dullcote: OK thanks for looking, comments invited! jb

I was at the launch of these race cars in the day, as a marshall at Silverstone Circuit. I have a photo somewhere of one of the cars (two car Team) with the mechanics and the TWR team owner the late Tom Walkinshaw stood beside it, I'll try and look it out!

Let's not start quoting 50 thousand photos. Just make a comment. Looks like you have a great start. I'll watch also.

yeah Pat, those images look like this exact (kit) car, or its stablemate, back in the day. The kit you show is actually what inspired me to finally buy this estate kit, I understand that is going to be reissued soon. thanks for the kool pics by the way, its one bad azz grocery getter.

Quick update, chassis and interior are done, body is in color, needs a quick polish, some decals, and clear. It is indeed a pleasure to build a Tamiya kit. Only deviation from box stock: an aftermarket Supertrapp style extractor: A peek at the body. Thanks for looking and comments welcome! jb

yeah Pat, I saw that when you originally posted it and it was an inspiration for me. I love that Trek bike on the back, I built that one for my Mooneyes trailer, but looks great on the back of a Vulva too! jb

Well, nothing ever turns out as simple as it seems. Paint was insufficient coverage, especially on the lower quarters, a common problem I have with yellow. So after a quick polish with the 6000 grit cloth to remove a couple tiny dust specs, back into the paint booth it went. Currently curing, meanwhile am considering the decals to use. Think I will mostly use the sheet that came with the kit, but without the graphics and most sponsors. A little cleaner. I might use the Auto Trader number squares though. Am considering those vs black circle enclosed white roundels with black numbers, on the yellow paint. And painting the area under the lower edge of the beltline semi-gloss black. A little tricky masking required in the front and rear but not bad.

I just noticed something, kinda funny. See in this photo the little brown wagon with the surf board on top? That is of course the Revell Germany Trabant 601. It is in the same scale as the Volvo, and its not a trick perspective photo or anything, though they are on a slightly different plane from one another. The thing could fit into the back of the Volvo! That one is on the bench soon, probably with some sort of engine transplant. Perhaps Japanese engine and running gear, so it will make it to the beach and back. Anyway, got this Volvo into decals and lower panel flat black, got a repair to do and then its on to final assembly. Thanks for looking and comments invited and appreciated! jb

Finishing this up today and will update the thread plus post a finished post, but I wanted to comment on something above. I was going to get that Aoshima 86 Macau sedan but I saw a writeup of it and it has these weird azz cambered tires. I do not understand that...yeah they are up to date with the drifter crowd, but this model is of a car from 1986, not 2016, and I am pretty sure they were not running those crazy cambered tires back then...the illustration on the box certainly doesn't look like they were. Why in the heck would they supply those with the kit? I can see as extra tires maybe but as the only ones? Either that is really dumb or I am, not sure which. Anyway that feature alone saved me the price of the kit! Could it be that the "86" refers to the year of the sedan and not the year of the race? If not its kind of confounding.
"86ed" = eight miles out of town and six feet under.
