I had this kit on my bench ready to start when I happened to win a "gluebomb" on ebay so I switched gears a bit . Note - I actually started this a week ago so I'm playing catch up here . The one I was going to build . And the "gluebomb" . The disassembly was about normal except for a lot of glue between the cab / bed and the frame , so much that I shouldn't have but I did force the issue and damaged the bed . Other than that it was the typical broken front and rear axle and spring . The engine is a solid block of plastic and the interior bucket and the firewall isn't going anywhere either ! Here's the damaged bed . Luckily the inside surface has clean edges around the hole so it's repairable . . . sort of . Up next : The Repair .

The first step was to cut the piece from the fender using a razor saw . Here it's just held in place to check the fit . This is after brushing both sides with some liquid cement . There's three small holes that need to be filled . I shaved some small bits of plastic from an inconspicuous place on the frame and placed them in a Pudding Cup , I'll actually use much smaller pieces than what you see here . The plastic is then soaked in MEK . It doesn't melt like with acetone , but gets very soft and very very sticky ! The small bit of plastic is then mushed into the hole with a craft stick . The MEK evaporates very slowly so there's plenty of time to work the plastic into the hole and feather it out . It's then sanded smooth using various sanding sticks . Here's a before and after photo . Still a couple of small holes to fill . I also checked the fit of the cab and the bed to the frame/fenders , and started polishing the plastic . Stay tuned !

WOW! You even used original kit plastic to smooth out that bed! Looks really good so far, I'm definitely tuned in to see how this turns out. Makes me want to do a restoration/rebuild to my old Lindberg '32 Ford Pickup one of these days.

Interesting body repair there. I like the idea. Where do you get your M.E.K.? It won't melt the pudding cup?

Interesting body repair there. I like the idea. Where do you get your M.E.K.? It won't melt the pudding cup? Actually the first time I've tried it with MEK . I've melted plastic in acetone before with good results but it's a kind of messy and I didn't want a lot of sanding since it won't be painted . So far the results aren't perfect but not to bad ! I bought the MEK at Ace Hardware . Home Depot has some but in fine print it says "substitute" , doesn't sound too good . And I don't know what those pudding cups are made of but so far I haven't found anything that melts them . After sitting in one until it evaporated the MEK etched the surface but that's all .

OK thanks. There's an ACE here in town. I'll see if I can get some and try that.

I'd google to see if MEK is available in Euro nations as it is a hazardous chemical and needs care in use. As to the model, so much care in building it "box stock." We are all impressed!

Time for a simple repair . The seats in these Monogram kits are mounted on studs molded into the interior bucket and they "Always" snap off during disassembly . Some mounts are square but these are round which makes repair really easy ! Simply drill out the seat bottom about 1/16 inch deep and the seats fit right onto the broken mounts . If the mounts would have been broken off at the floorboard I would have had to replace them with some round rod , but these snapped right at the seats so no problem . I also finished polishing the parts and then sprayed them with one coat of clear . Here's the finished bed with some homemade decals applied . Unless I point out the repair I doubt anyone would ever see it .
To be continued . . .

How many versions of this kit were made, the box looks like its older then the 70s streetrod version that I just finished. The original version was the Blue Beetle released in 1964 , this Tom Daniel version was released in 1970 . I don't think there was a reissue between these two versions , but there have been a few since . There was a reissue with a black truck on the box , a yellow truck on the box , and the latest Blue Bandito reissue . There are probably others .
