Mustang Boss 429 Funny Car Built for the Out-Of-The Box Challenge on the Vintage Drag Models forum, this is the first funny car project I’ve ever taken on. I’m afraid if you look carefully you’ll see some rookie mistakes but overall it has the brutish, purposeful look I remember from seeing these cars race. Even though the OOB challenge allowed free choice of decals and wheels and tires it was otherwise very strict, including banning detailing of any kind, including basic engine wiring and plumbing. I’m afraid I got carried away and, besides going whole hog on the paint and decal scheme, I wired and plumbed the engine and cut out the rear window and installed transparent red acetate – big time no’no’s which meant an instant DQ. But I enjoyed participating, working on a new subject for me, and have been very impressed with the many fine builds which have resulted. Obviously this is pretty much a stock MPC Blue Max kit, which incidentally includes a set of Boss 429 valve covers along with the standard MPC Chrysler Hemi, and even a set of Big Block Chevy heads and valve covers. It’s obvious these are extra parts for the other body types in this series. The paint is Duplicolor Metalcast transparent red over Testors Pure Gold Lacquer with Duplicolor Wimbledon White side panels. The lettering and fogged panels were all done with home made decals. Most of the kit chrome was stripped and various shades of Testors Metalizers substituted for a race-ready utilitarian look. I’m certain this won’t be my last funny car builds. These are great kits and very enjoyable to work with. Thanx for looking, B.

Really awesome build, I like those old funny cars where you could still see what the body was based on.

Really nice work as always from you! I agree with the Swedish fella above, these old Funny Cars were neat as you could immediately see what car the body was based on... Nowadays only clues are the headlight and grill decals (Even though I enjoy following them too). Very nice work overall with this one. That paint scheme with those homemade decals is great, something we've never seen before. And even though it was for a Box Stock Challenge, I think it's a big thumbs up that you added detailing to the engine. Nice work!

Great looking build love the paint. I also love the old funny cars and AWB cars as said above they look like a production car. Have got several of both style cars still to build. You always have great looking cars.

Thanks again! Glad you dig it! Impressive, to say the least. Thanks! I'm a big fan of your skillfully executed models and the realistic weathering that they often include. The recent Citroen Traction was a particular favorite.

Thanks again, guys! Months after finishing this I remain of two minds about it. On the one hand it looks great on my shelf, being the only funny car and all done up in bright paint and decals. On the other hand it's recent enough that I still remember how hard it fought me all the way to completion, and the countless little faults throughout that will always bug me. But that's car modeling! I guess I'll have to do another one to get it, uh..., more right...
