Over on bench #2.......
Have started one of the (3) 1/16 scale Hawaiian Charger kits I have - this first one I plan to build pretty much box stock. I am going to attempt a little different blue paint job, using a chrome paint base, wet sand, then plan on using a translucent blue After this, a color effects clear, decals, and a final high gloss clear coat to set the decals. Possibly use Future for this last clear coat.
laid some chrome paint - changed my mind and opted for Universal Chrome by Dupli-color, instead of the Hobby Lobby brand.
Got most items called for flat black sprayed
Dupli-color, carbon fiber metallic for the block. Testors black pearl metallic for the body support struts and fuel tank
Dupli-color, black chrome Shadow paint on the chrome parts, kind of hard to see, was a very light coat, just enough to dry and take the "fake" off the chrome
Wet sanded - off for the final chrome coats....
Gonna let it breathe for the week before attempting the Translucent Blue - hope it works!

Thanks Harron - I almost do not want to try the blue, LOL Chrome paint laid so nicely, but I just gotta try it, worst case, in the pond she goes, or in this case, I will have to make a lake! Ha!

You're one kool kat to try it in 1/16th!!! At some of the other model sites folks use the "spoon test." Get cheapo plastic spoons at a dollar store and test paint on one of them instead of a full size experiment. Wish you success!

I've used Tamiya Clear Blue over Duplicolor Chrome before and it works just fine . It ends up looking like a dark Candy Blue , very nice ! Looking forward to seeing this build , I've always wanted to build one myself !

Thanks toold, makes me feel a little better to know that someone has done the exact same thing for paint. Once I get masked off what needs masked, I will be applying the blue on this big boy this weekend! Plus, am planning to get after that motor some more as well!

Applied 2 coats of Tamiya Translucent Blue over the Dupli-color Chrome Not too bad, gonna probably go one, if not 2 more light coats, right now, this blue is just a shade darker than the decals.

Wet sanded lightly, applied a few more light coats of translucent blue I do believe we have the blue I was after! At least I am pleased
Now to set this aside and let this dry nice and hard like fine china before decals, polish, and clear coat. And we're off to the chassis and the huge HEMI motor!

Great color. Blue really pops over that base.

Thanks boxcar! The way work has been and all, it was pretty much painted by porch light in the evenings. These pictures are from the bench and the lamp - cant wait to look this over in the sunshine!

Finally - got some bench time yesterday on this big funny car - Framework and parts sprayed, assembly to follow. Got some more itsy bitsy things on the massive Hemi, put together the 2 part distributor and installed boots. And after flat black, satin black, decals then gloss clear - think I got the seat looking fairly real

The long gone AURORA company had an excellent line of superdetailed parts for the 1/16 drag machines. They were excellent and it's a real shame no company ever took over to fill the need. I used a couple of the parts kits for my charger diorama. What on my kit I would've changed were the thin vinyl tubing lines that now days would be improved with braided wire and aftermarket fittings. Best of luck on the completion of this sleek beauty!

I have seen some of those Aurora kits go across eBay - they must be awesome, they sure have some awesome price tags!!
Took me like an hour of fidgeting around with this distributor to get it installed, I HOPE, correctly. Probably be this weekend until I get the chance to get the plug wires on.
Gonna look on eBay to see if there are any 1/16 belts that may look nicer than the kit supplied belt. Only have one printer, so I can't tear that sucker apart for a belt right now, LOL

Superb engine work/paint. Yes, sadly the Aurora accessory 1/16th kits were made in very low numbers and sell for ridiculous prices. I CANNOT understand why no(large or small) manufacturer ever came out with reissues. There were blown engines with full insides, detailed transmissions (clutch/flywheel), injected engines, crewmen, tool chests with opening drawers and tools, engine stands, and extra funny car bodies. Just no foresight these days.
